Pierre Boulez's Répons refers to the responsorial masterpieces by Gabrieli and Monteverdi, with an instrumental ensemble at the center of the installation, six soloists on the periphery, and electronics throughout the space. Répons is also one of the high points of electroacoustic music. Répons is also one of the peaks of electroacoustic music. The dramatic entrance of the solistes and the electronics shortly after the sixth minute still has the dramatic force of a first time. With stunning mastery, Boulez unites all the actors of the work in a symbiotic relationship. The image of a "spiral form" has imposed itself, each moment allowing us to observe the trajectory travelled and the path to come. This evening begins with the premiere of Anthèmes 2 in its version for viola and electronics. The writing categories of the strings - pizzicato, trill, organ point, harmonics - are scaled by the electronics. The end of Anthèmes 2, like that of Répons, draws a horizon line, a smooth time. It masterfully embodies the Boulezian art of the unfinished. Or how not to finish.
